Biography
Pianist Gloria Engle is the Director of Preparatory School at Gifted Music School in Salt Lake City, Utah. She made her debut when she was twelve years old, accompanying her friend who played Haydn’s G Major Concerto on the violin. Ever since, she has celebrated the multifaceted artistry of collaboration by exploring art song, opera, chamber music, and orchestral/choralensembles.
She has performed chamber music with musicians of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, LA Philharmonic, National Symphony Orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic, saxophonist Dr. Chien-Kwan Lin, trombonist Yu Tamaki Hoso, and bassist Xavier Foley. Through the support of SongFest, she gave the US premiere of “Fata Morgana” by Pavel Haas (2019) and “Radiant Depth Unfolded” by Anne LeBaron (2015) for which LA Times lauded “capturing exquisite intricacies of sonorities.”
Serving as a collaborative pianist, Engle has assisted workshops and masterclasses led by distinguished artists such as Sir Thomas Allen, Stephanie Blythe, Richard Croft, Renée Fleming, John Harbison, Jake Heggie, Frederica von State, John Musto, Paul Katz, and Miriam Fried.
Gloria was on music staff at prominent festivals including SongFest, the International Horn Symposium, the Aspen Music Festival, the Interlochen Summer Arts Festival, and Druid City Opera. She also held faculty positions at Virginia Tech, Texas A&M Kingsville, and Eastman Opera Theater.
Dedicated to presenting contemporary music, Engle has collaborated with Virginia Tech’s music faculty at the New Music + Technology Festival, Rice University’s Electroacoustic Music Labs, Eastman’s Musica Nova, and the Beal Institute for Film Music.
