MUSIC THEORY INSTRUCTOR

POSITION OVERVIEW

Gifted Music School seeks a part-time instructor to teach Level III Music Theory (Chromatic Harmony) at the Gifted Music School in Salt Lake City, UT. The instructor will join a dynamic teaching team committed to elevating the standards of pre-collegiate music education. The ideal candidate will have a firm grasp of diatonic and chromatic theory and introductory aural skills, including a facility with moveable ‘Do’, a Do-based minor, and the ‘ta-ka-di-mi’ rhythmic syllables. Experience teaching music theory and aural skills to young, aspiring musicians in a supportive and integrated classroom setting—while maintaining an academic standard of excellence—is preferred. The successful candidate will be required to report to the Theory Area Chair and the Executive Director, attend regular Theory Area meetings, provide clear and constructive feedback to the students, assess students’ progress throughout the school year (which includes devising drills, assignments, and tests), and become generally familiar with the Conservatory program at the Gifted Music School.

Classes for the 2025-26 school year are taught on Saturday mornings as part of a weekend program. The class schedule is subject to change from year to year. Lastly, Gifted Music School seeks candidates demonstrating an enthusiastic desire to be part of a growing program that inspires a future generation of inquisitive, discerning, and well-rounded musicians.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Earned a minimum of master’s degree in music—MA, MM, MMA, MS, DMA, or PhD in music theory or theory pedagogy preferred.
  2. Experience in teaching theory and aural skills courses; facility with moveable ‘Do’, a Do-based minor, and the ‘ta-ka-di-mi’ rhythmic syllables preferred.
  3. Must speak English fluently.
