About the Course

This course is open to musicians and non-musicians alike. Each weekly session will examine how politics has inspired, influenced, and even censored the creative process. From music written for a political occasion, like Vincent Persichetti's composition for Richard Nixon's second inauguration, to instances of political interference, such as Shostakovich's struggles under the Stalin regime, our exploration will span a diverse spectrum of scenarios and geographies.

Lecture 1: Luigi Dallapiccola, Italian Dodecaphony, and the Spirit of Irredentism
Music: Liriche Greche, "Due liriche di Anacreonte" (1945)

Lecture 2: Censorship at an Inaugural Concert I: Aaron Copland and A Lincoln Portrait
Music: A Lincoln Portrait (1942) and Canticle of Freedom (1955)
