About the Course
This course is open to musicians and non-musicians alike. Each weekly session will examine how politics has inspired, influenced, and even censored the creative process. From music written for a political occasion, like Vincent Persichetti's composition for Richard Nixon's second inauguration, to instances of political interference, such as Shostakovich's struggles under the Stalin regime, our exploration will span a diverse spectrum of scenarios and geographies.

Dr. Michael Chikinda
Dr. Michael Chikinda is head of the music theory areas at the University of Utah School of Music and Gifted Music School. He has published on several Twentieth-century topics: an article on Arvo Pärt's And one of the Pharisee's appeared in Perspectives of New Music (2011), an article about Vincent Persichetti and a perplexing incident at the Second Inauguration of Richard Nixon in 1973 was published in the journal Music and Politics (2018), and a book chapter, "The Four Verses of Captain Lebyadkin: Nihilism and Transcendence in Late Shostakovich" was published in 20th- and 21st-Century Song Cycles: Analytical Pathways Toward Performance (Routledge: 2020). Dr. Chikinda completed his dissertation at the University at Buffalo, SUNY - under the direction of Dr. Martha Hyde - on the early twelve-tone works of the Italian composer Luigi Dallapiccola. Dr. Chikinda has taught at the University at Buffalo, the University of Guelph (Guelph, Ontario), Dalhousie University (Halifax, Nova Scotia), Queen's University (Kingston, Ontario), and presently at both the University of Utah and the Gifted Music School. He has presented his research at scholarly conferences in both North America and Europe.
