Kevin Shumway Biography

 Kevin Shumway is a member of the Utah Symphony cello section. He grew up in Holladay, Utah. As a teenager, he studied with Stephen Emerson, Assistant Principal Cello of the Utah Symphony. At Northwestern University Kevin studied cello performance with Hans Jensen. In his senior year he was the winner of the Northwestern University School of Music Concerto Competition. At the National Repertory Orchestra's summer festival he was soloist with Joseph Silverstein, violinist and conductor. His final year of conservatory training took place at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied with Stephen Geber, Principal Cello of the Cleveland Orchestra.

Kevin's favorite composers are Brahms and Puccini. His favorite food is peanut butter - the kind that you have to stir. He is married to Emily Day-Shumway, Associate Concertmaster of the Ballet West Orchestra. They have three awesome sons Avery, Quinn and Soren, and a white cat named Shiny.
