Elements of composition music lessons with young girls playing violin

Elements of Composition

This course is designed to help students develop their composition skills by focusing on musicality and good writing techniques in the following five areas: melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, and form. The study of orchestration will be integrated into the studies of these areas. We will pay particular attention to creativity and problem solving by doing compositional exercises each week that present various challenges and limitations to overcome and work around. Additionally, each student will have a personal project that they will be able to work on throughout the semester and that will lead up to a performance, either live or digital, at the end of the term. Please note that this course is geared towards classical composition and not popular styles.
