Chamber Music

There is nothing better than playing music with friends! The study of chamber music allows students to work together through focused activity and shared goals. Ensemble playing gives each member a chance to develop listening skills, musical sensitivity, and group dynamics. Students in Gifted Music School's Chamber Music program will participate in a structured high-level chamber ensemble where they will be coached weekly by a member of our Gifted Music School faculty, as well as a weekly guided rehearsal. Chamber music builds essential musical growth for students, opportunities to work with other faculty, as well as connections with a broader musical community. This course will supplement an individual student’s communication, note-reading, rhythm, score study, listening, and more. Groups are assigned based on audition submissions, age, and level.

Eligibility for Enrollment

Students Suzuki Book Level 3 and above, and ages 8-18 are eligible for this course. This course is open to violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, and piano. Students who are not enrolled in individual lessons with a faculty member at Gifted Music School are eligible to apply, ensemble availability permitting. We hope to accommodate every application; however, we may not be able to place every applicant. Pre-formed groups are also eligible to apply.

Audition Requirements

Students need to submit a video with: (1) one scale of choice and (2) one solo piece roughly five minutes in length. Videos are due by August 23, 2021 and can be submitted through the online application form.

Attendance Policy

Students may have up to one (1) absence per semester. Having all ensemble members present at each coaching and rehearsal is imperative for everyone’s learning experience. Although tuition is charged by the semester, students should commit to the full year of chamber music—each individual member is indispensable to their ensemble!

Parents are not required to attend rehearsals. Chamber time will be structured to have a 50-minute coaching and either another 50-minute or 30-minute (depending on age) rehearsal with a Conservatory mentor or parent. Groups will have organized rehearsal time with a list of spots to practice, provided by the coaches/Conservatory mentors.

Students need to be individually prepared with their own part, taking the music to the private teacher if necessary. This program requires regular practice on the assigned piece(s).

Each of the chamber ensembles will perform at an end-of-term concert in the fall and spring semesters.
