Ballet West Academy and GMS Collaboration

Ballet and Music

"All arts are connected.  All artists draw inspiration from one another."

The GMS Conservatory students began rehearsals last weekend with the Ballet West Academy in Peter Merz's remarkable new choreography of Schubert's "Death and the Maiden". It's an amazing collaboration, and hopefully the first of many to come in this well balanced partnership.

To be a musician means we strive to be an artist. An artist draws inspiration from life, nature, the cosmos, abstract thoughts, philosophy... and expresses that thought through the medium that best serves the abilities of the artist.

But, when we unite different artistic mediums--even greater magic can occur.

In particular, when movement and music combine--art of the highest magnitude becomes possible. Balanchine and Tchaivkosy combined with the artists at the Bolshoi--it is beyond words.

So when the opportunity to collaborate arose--it was a no brainer. If musicians can see the emotions, phrases and lines of their music represented by beautiful choreography, it adds a completely new level of understanding to the music they are studying. In turn, for dancers, hearing and experiencing music that is performed for them, defines and inspires their movement.
