Piano Ensemble Instructor

JOB SUMMARY

Gifted Music School seeks a dynamic and engaging Piano Ensemble Instructor to join the Conservatory at Gifted Music School in Salt Lake City, UT. The teaching artist would be expected to join a serious teaching team committed to raising, nurturing, and coaching students of all ages and backgrounds.
 
The Piano Ensemble Instructor reports to the Piano Department Chair and will work in close cooperation with the Conservatory Manager and Artistic Director, as well as other members of the team. The instructor's primary role is to conduct the Piano Ensemble on a weekly basis.
 
Specific responsibilities for the Piano Ensemble Instructor will include, but are not limited to:
  • Lead the Piano Ensemble in weekly rehearsals (approximately 31 weeks) and at performances, coaching students to reach their highest potential by fostering collaboration, discipline, and excellence among ensemble members.
  • Select challenging and inspiring repertoire that will develop individual and ensemble skills.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship, helping students develop artistry and build character.
  • Prepare the ensemble for performances with the highest possible artistic standards commensurate with a national-level pre-college classical music training program.
  • Coordinate and build relationships with other ensemble coaches and faculty members to foster a collaborative and community-driven school campus.
  • Actively recruit and encourage prospective students to audition for the Conservatory or enroll in lessons at Gifted Music School.
  • Coordinate with colleagues across campus to learn more about the school’s various and diverse offerings and foster a learning environment that nurtures creativity and intellectual curiosity.
  • Conference with parents and students to address problems or provide counseling on students' musical development.
  • Perform administrative tasks associated with students’ attendance, scheduling, and communications.
  • Report to the department chair and attend, assist, and contribute to school/departmental events.
  • Perform other related duties as requested by the department chair or Conservatory Manager.
Hourly wage is commensurate with education and experience. The Piano Ensemble rehearses on Friday evenings from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in piano performance or related field
  • Demonstrated evidence of effective ensemble leadership and piano teaching
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated English proficiency; Spanish or other language would be a strong asset
  • Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above

 

PREFERENCES

In particular, we are looking for candidates with:
  • A strong background in coaching advanced piano students
  • Advanced degrees in music (MM, MMA, or DMA) with significant experience in teaching piano students
  • An active teaching career and interest in making teaching activities at Gifted Music School a career priority
  • Commitment to maintaining a reliable schedule and adhering to the school calendar
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to contribute to a high-performance team environment while being supportive of colleagues, staff, parents, and students
  • A strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the ensemble and meeting the needs of a diverse population
  • A strong understanding of the value of comprehensive music instruction
Familiarity with Gifted Music School’s policies and procedures, as well as the school’s systems (i.e. My Music Staff) is preferred but not expected or required.
